When the weather is nice enough, there’s nothing better than getting outside. Many people who exercise trade their treadmills and stationary bikes for sidewalks, pavement and actual bikes.

If you’re an avid bicyclist, you already know the benefits of biking. You’re also a trendsetter. According to a study conducted in 2011 and cited by Men’s Fitness magazine, bicycling has doubled in popularity since 1990.

But just because it’s the cool thing to do right now doesn’t mean that’s the only reason to take up biking. Here are three reasons that you may not have considered.

1. It’s a stress reliever.

We’ve been told time and time again that exercising is a great way to relieve stress. But bicyclists might actually reap the benefits more than those who run or jog. Why? Bicycling is a legitimate method of transportation. Studies have shown that those who use bicycles as a means of transportation have a significantly lower stress level than those who commute via cars and public transportation.

2. It’s a great way to connect with family.

It’s become one of the great iconic images of family life in the United States – the mother or father who is pushing a young child on a bicycle … and then lets go for the first time. Bicycling is a great multigenerational activity. Parents can go on bike rides with their children. Grandparents can ride with their grandkids. Tandem biking is a great family activity. (Going out in a Rhoades Car combines the possibilities of both biking and conversation; no more yelling over your shoulder while going on a ride!)

3. It’s another way to connect with the outdoors.

There’s a reason why we all migrate outdoors once the temperature starts to warm up. Biking is a great method of transportation to visit a local park. Many parks offer biking trails, allowing for another way to take in nature other than hiking. Taking in all of the fresh air and the beauty of nature, it’s hard not to feel young again when you take your bike out for a ride.

It’s time to get your bike out of the garage, clean it off, and take it out for a ride. It won’t take you long to fall in love all over again with bicycling.

Ready to pedal?

Bicycling is an activity that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It’s a great way to get exercise while connecting with those you love and enjoying the outdoors. It doesn’t get much better than that!
