We love to hear and see the creativity that our customers have with our bikes.  Loa, from Cincinnati, OH, recently crowd-funded the very first “VegCycle.”  “The VegCycle™ campaign will help fund the construction, storage and maintenance of a portable hydroponic growing structure. We want to create a bicycle with a huge tray of plants on the back that are growing in nutrient rich water which is fed by fish that live below the plants. To complete the sustainable growing cycle, the pump that circulates the water between the fish and the plants will be powered by a solar cell.”

The picture above is one from the VegCycle team.  This is a really neat and impressive bike and we’re glad that we could help provide the quadracycle model for VegCycle and we hope they continue to have success in their community!  You can learn more about the VegCycle and their updates at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/vegcycle-community-education#/.

MID-YEAR REVIEW

25th Anniversary Bike

We’ve spent the last week reviewing how the first half of the year has done and we’re extremely pleased with 2016.  One thing that has really exceeded our expectations is the 25th Year Anniversary bike.  When we set out to offer something different for our 25th year, we wanted something fun, all-inclusive, and discounted.  We knew the custom paint would add a level of fun and the accessory upgrade would make it all-inclusive for some of the most popular upgrades available.  And the discount is what threw it over the top and we’re glad we packaged this bike the way we did.  We’ve seen customers price it out separately and find that is really does saves hundreds of dollars.  When they realize this, it’s great to see and hear their reactions!  We truly are grateful for the past six months and are looking forward to seeing what the next six months will bring.  Thank you for watching us grow and for being a part of the Rhoades Car family!

P.S. If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate Christmas in July, we have the perfect gift for you!

Unique Summer Exercises

Rhoades Car SummerSummer Exercising Opportunities

As the summer reaches its peak, life can get pretty crazy. While taking vacation and spending additional time with your family is a good thing, it can also cut in to your traditional exercise time. After all, it’s hard to exercise if you’re driving to the beach!

We have already suggested some ways to stay cool as you exercise in the summer. Here are some creative ways to incorporate exercise into your summer routine, regardless of how atypical it may be!

While you’re at home:

So many chores, so little time. In the summer months, after getting that outdoor work done, the last thing you want to do is exercise. So why not combine the two?

Turn washing your car into an exercising opportunity. Instead of going through a drive-thru automatic car wash, get out the hose and the bucket and wash the car by hand. Or if that’s not an option, go to a car wash that allows you to scrub yourself. According to BlueCross BlueShield of Michigan, a car wash can burn 35 calories in 10 minutes.

Take advantage of trips to the store. If you’re just making a quick trip for a couple of items, can you walk or jog instead of driving? Or how about taking your Rhoades Car? It’s a quick way to get a few minutes of exercising in.

Make mowing the lawn and other yard work more productive. It’s not necessarily a fun chore, but mowing the lawn with a push lawnmower is a great workout! Gardening can be exercise as well; an hour’s worth of weeding and tending can burn as many as 300 calories!

Exercise while you’re on vacation:

Between the travel and the hustle and bustle, where’s the time to exercise, right? Here are some ideas for sneaking in a bit of cardio and healthy living without your family or travel group even noticing!

Take the stairs. Whether you’re at your hotel or sightseeing, there are probably more opportunities to take the stairs as opposed to the elevator. Greatist.com offers this good insight as well: Many tourist attractions that include stairs also have unique architecture or other things that you wouldn’t see if you raced to the elevator.

Go on a walking or biking tour. We’ve already discussed lots of vacation opportunities for a biking enthusiast, but here’s another reminder. Even if you’re not going on a vacation that was meant for biking or hiking or walking, there are opportunities to work them in. Instead of a bus tour of the city, opt for a walking tour. Or take your Rhoades Car with you on vacation and enjoy it in a new setting. (Don’t forget to take your referral cards to hand out when people ask you where you got it so you can collect those $150 referral fees!)

Stash healthy snacks in your room. Have a mini-fridge? Perfect! Go to the store and stockpile it with your favorite healthy snacks. Or go walk around the market (see, there’s another opportunity to walk!) and take advantage of all the healthy food options surrounding you.

While you’re at play:

Recreation is an obvious opportunity for exercise, whether you’re at home or on vacation. Here are some ideas you might not have considered, though.

Hiking or biking: We’ve mentioned this a lot, but it’s a great way to get a fun workout in to your tight schedule!

Kayaking: Paddling is hard work and is a great upper body workout. Prevention magazine writes that one hour of paddling can burn 340 calories!

Speedminton: Never heard of it? Prevention describes it as a “cross between racquetball, badminton, and tennis, but with no nets or walls involved.” All it requires is racquets, a speeder (similar to the birdie in badminton) and some chalk to draw a court. And it burns 400 calories an hour.

Inline skating: It might not necessarily be the trendy workout of the moment like it used to be, but there’s no doubting the benefits. A single hour of skating can burn more than 800 calories. And consider this – skating is better on your knees than jogging.

Swimming lessons: They’re not just for kids! Check with your local parks and recreation facilities to see whether they offer adult classes. It’s a great opportunity to workout and meet other people in your area.

Go to the playground: You have to take the kids to the playground anyway, right? So take advantage of the equipment available to you. Use the pull-up bars. Swing. Find space to do some planks or lunges. There’s more there than you think!

So … no more excuses! Take advantage of one (or several!) of these opportunities and get to exercising! Did you come up with another option not on this list? Share it with us below by leaving a comment please.

Tips for Exercising in the Summer Heat

Tips for Exercising in the Summer Heat

As temperatures climb and many of us reach the hottest days of the summer months, exercising outdoors becomes trickier. We’ve all heard the many stories of athletes – both professional and amateur alike – suffering from heat exhaustion while working out in hot conditions.

Biking is one of those activities. If you’re going to ride while it’s excessively warm, consider these tips to avoid heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration.

Consider the time of day.

If you don’t have to exercise or ride in the heat of the afternoon, don’t. Active.com contributor Joe Decker recommends early morning as the best time for outdoor activities on an excessively hot day.

It can’t be said enough. Drink lots of water before you head out. Take a water bottle with you. Also, be sure to replenish your electrolytes.

Clothing matters.

When it’s hot outside, it’s not the best time to wear your tight-fitting t-shirts. Opt instead for loose fitting clothing that’s lighter in color. Cotton is good; specially designed running shirts and shorts are better, as many of them are made with material specifically meant to keep you cool.

Wear sunscreen.

Yep, we’ve all heard this one over and over again as well, but it’s important. Apply at least an SPF 45 before heading out for a workout.

Consider humidity.

If the day is predicted to be both excessively hot and humid, move your workout indoors. Researchers say that humidity is a significant factor in exercising safely. On humid days, your body’s sweat doesn’t adequately evaporate to cool you, so you’re better off in an indoor location.

Rhoades CarDon’t exercise alone.

A good tip from the American Heart Association – having a friend or family member with you while exercising not only makes the activity more fun, but it’s safer for both of you. You’re never too old for the buddy system. Riding a Rhoades Car with a friend is always more fun.

Be smart.

Most importantly, pace yourself. If you’re forced to work out in the heat of the day, don’t push yourself beyond your capabilities. Consider indoor options if it’s excessively hot and you’re not able to get your exercise early in the morning.

But … it’s not all bad.

According to Men’s Fitness magazine, heat can actually improve your performance when taken into proper consideration. Now, it’s not recommended for the casual or recreational athlete, but studies have shown that high-level cyclists have made significant improvements once becoming acclimated to working out in a higher temperature.

Even so, high heat and humidity are not things to be taken lightly. Plan accordingly, hydrate and get out as early in the day as possible to enjoy the benefits of a summer workout and comfortable ride. Exercise is important, even in the heat of the summer.

5 Quick and Easy Daily Exercise Tips

Photo from Flickr by Kevin Dooley

Photo from Flickr by Kevin Dooley

Let’s face it. When it comes to exercising, we tend to brush it aside pretty quickly. It takes too much time, we say. Who has time to go to the gym after work when the kids need to be fed and laundry needs to be done and you have a big presentation at work tomorrow?

Juggling life isn’t easy. But exercising doesn’t always have to be complicated. Yes, going to the gym or getting outside to exercise is important, but there are other quick and easy ways to get a couple of minutes of exercise in while you’re working on other things.

Here are some of our favorite suggestions. Give these a try. We’re willing to bet you can squeeze some of these into your daily routine.

1. Going to the store? Park farther away from the door.

Why would you want to do that? Because the extra few steps you walk are a good way to get a brief bit of exercising in.  If you’re going grocery shopping and you have a couple of extra minutes, consider pushing your cart an extra lap around the store before heading to the checkout. Or take an extra lap around the mall. Either way, be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

2. Cooking dinner? Do counter push-ups in the kitchen.

It may seem bizarre at first glance, but this suggestion from Prevention Magazine actually makes a lot of sense. While you’re waiting for dinner to bake or water to boil, put your arms on the counter and do some standing push-ups. The article suggests standing about an arm’s length away from the counter for maximum impact.

3. Watching TV? Grab a quick workout during commercial breaks.

Instead of sitting and watching commercials, take advantage of the time and try this simple exercise suggested by Seventeen magazine called a “Star Pass.” Here’s how the article describes it:

“Start in a standing position with your arms over your head, holding the remote control in between both hands. Bend to your right, lifting your left leg off the ground so that your body looks like a star. Then repeat to the left.”

4. Eating lunch at work? Sneak a quick walk in on your lunch break.

More and more professionals are taking advantage of their midday 30- or 60-minute breaks to get a brisk walk in. According to Fitness Magazine, a walk is not only good for you physically, but it will help make you more productive in those sluggish afternoon hours than sitting and eating lunch at your desk.

5. Have chores to do around the house? Make them exercise moments.

The American Heart Association offers several great tips for making the most out of those household chores we dislike so much. Use a push mower to mow the grass. Take the dog for a walk. Stretch while reaching things on high shelves. Squat to reach things on low shelves. If possible, walk or bike to the store instead of driving. All of these things seem minor, but together would add up to a fairly substantial workout.

While those may be our favorites, there are many, many more possibilities for adding exercise moments to your daily routine.  What are some things you’re doing to improve your exercising during the week? Leave us a comment, we would love to hear about it.

How to burn 300 – 500 calories an hour

By incorporating exercises into things we already do every day, we create new habits for ourselves that will improve our health. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, try some of these exercises, then try a more rigorous workout on days when you have a less hectic schedule. Establishing a routine is important!

Want to know our secret way to burn 300 – 500 calories per hour? Read this.

A fun way to lose weight and get healthier

Ummm – Christmas tree cookies, pumpkin pie, chocolate-covered cherries and lots of turkey and ham! The traditional holiday diet for so many of us, right? And is our belt fitting even tighter early in the New Year?

So time to turn the treadmill or NordicTrack or rowing machine back into a piece of exercise equipment instead of a clothes hanger….or is it?

Wouldn’t it be more fun to exercise with someone you really care about in a Rhoades Car two-seater? Side-by-side so you can talk and reflect on the coming year? And take the kids on a four-seater?

You can do all of the above with a Rhoades Car four wheel bike that drives like a car with extra comfortable seats. Enjoy pedaling in separate gears, and add the pedal-assist motor to help build endurance.

Don’t fail in your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight and get healthier.

“I lost 20lbs the first year I had mine. No other changes other than taking my Rhoades car on all the errands I could.”

Cycling burns 300-500 calories an hour and now it’s something you can do together or as a family, all while supporting American manufacturing!IMG_0158jacey

Announcing the Rhoades SOLARped Series – 100% Powered by the Sun

HENDERSONVILLE, TN — October 16, 2013 —Rhoades Car International, the nation’s leading 4-wheel bicycle manufacturer, today announced the release of a new model series – the Rhoades SOLARped – 100% powered by the sun.

“This is really exciting because we’ve been able to source a flexible, mono-crystalline, 190 watt solar panel which attaches to the existing windshield on our SportPed model,” explained company president, Bill Pomakoy.   “That panel is absolutely amazing because it allows the rider to keep the 24 volt battery system that runs the electric motor charged while on a ride.  I took the two seater out for a 17 mile ride and returned with absolutely no battery drain whatsoever.  I could have gone on for hours and hours more,” added Pomakoy.

SOLARped P2 With the Rhoades SOLARped, customers can have the best of all worlds – pedal assistance when desired from the PD750 electric motor along with a powerful solar panel that keeps the batteries charged and never needs to be plugged in to a wall outlet.  It’s completely off-the-grid!

The Rhoades SOLARped Series is available in one and two person versions.  The 1-person SOLARped P1 uses a 110 watt solar panel to charge the batteries and the 2-person, side-by-side, SOLARped P2 employs the 190 watt panel for additional power.  The company plans to add a 4 person model in 2014.

“There are so many applications for this new technology,” according to Phyllis Shelton, Rhoades Car Vice President of Sales.  “In addition to our residential customers enjoying all of the benefits of the SOLARped, our industrial customers can enjoy the fact that they can purchase a Rhoades SOLARped for SOLARped P1their work fleet at a much lower acquisition cost compared to a golf cart and their employees can get healthy by pedaling.  Plus the annual maintenance costs are minimal for even further savings along with the incredible employee health benefits of riding a Rhoades,” added Shelton.

Rhoades Car International, headquartered in Hendersonville, Tennessee, offers a unique line of four-wheel bicycles for residential and industrial use.  Celebrating its 22nd year in business in 2013, the company relies on local suppliers that share the high quality craftsmanship philosophy to produce custom components for all of its 4-wheel “quad” bikes – proudly made in the USA!

Health, Wealth, Happiness and Future: The Brilliant Benefits of A Rhoades Car with a European Flair

By Guest Writer Julie Stonehill

The SportPed by Rhoades CarCool Ride - side-by-side

The SportPed by Rhoades Car – Cool ride – Side-by-Side

The list of personal benefits to be gained from the use of a Rhoades Car seems to be endless. Our happy customers speak for us when it comes to bragging about how great our bikes are – way back in 2012, one customer, David Kong, was so pleased to not be affected by rising gas prices that he wrote in to tell us, and gas prices have risen considerably since then. Whether you’re using it for fun, for travel or a combination of the two, you won’t regret choosing to travel in a Rhoades Car.Sure, there are a few compromises to be made here and there (added weight, etc.), but they are so insignificant compared to the positive attributes of our four-wheeled bicycles that they hardly seem worth considering.

Health

We are often told through the media that we’re unhealthy, and that this has a lot to do with poor diet and not enough exercise. This isn’t very surprising, when you consider that the most exercise we do in a day is walking from the house to the car and the car to work. Finding the time to exercise in a busy schedule can be very difficult, so why not double up a boring commute to work with a pleasant bike ride?

Head to any city in Europe and you are almost sure to see hoards of commuters cycling to work. In London, they tend to look fierce and are clad from head to toe in spandex as they stressfully try to maneuver their way around their big, red buses. We prefer the more relaxed approach taken by the Dutch – take a trip to Amsterdam and you’ll see some very chilled commuters, with their skirts elegantly floating in the breeze and no helmet to mess up their hair.

The Rhoades Cars can give you the benefit of a relaxing commute without the hassle of having to stay balanced on two wheels, or worry too much about the rain. A number of our models come with a canopy, so you can stay dry while enjoying the fresh air.

HappinessGoBoy 2seat 11 x 13

For a long time, it has been believed that with good physical health and exercise comes good mental health. This is partly thanks to the endorphins released during exercise that are thought to block pain receptors in the brain and allow the pleasure associated with neurotransmitters to become more apparent. Starting your day by releasing these endorphins could make for a much better Monday at work than sitting in a motorcar.

Wealth

The Rhoades Car can keep your wallet healthy on almost every level, too. In the first instance, it’s a lot cheaper to buy than a car – with the average new car costing $30,500 – while giving you a lot of the same conveniences. While most of the time you can choose to use your own power to drive it, if you’re carrying a heavy load you can use the optional electric motor to give you a helping hand, and there are enough seats to use it as a family car. Rhoades Cars are available in 1, 2 and 4 seat versions.  Secondly, it’s a lot cheaper to get insurance coverage for your bike than it is for your car, which means that if something goes wrong, you’re insured without having to pay too much each year. There is less to go wrong on a Rhoades Car than a motorcar, and Rhoades Car carry a two year warranty should anything go wrong in this time frame. Then, of course, there is the matter of gas. When you’re pedaling yourself around, there’s no need to pay huge amounts of money for gas that just keeps going up in price.

Future

In addition to all the personal benefits that come with the Rhoades Car, it is of course better for the environment. The Union of Concerned Scientists reports that every gallon of gas burned in the running of a motor vehicle emits just under 25 pounds of gases – including carbon dioxide – into the atmosphere. Some of this figure they have attributed to the extraction and delivery of gas, but the majority of it comes “right out of a car’s tailpipe”. With so many cars on the road, now is a better time than ever to start swapping those cars for bikes to try and protect the environment for future generations. And you might just have some fun doing it, too.
