A fun way to lose weight and get healthier

Ummm – Christmas tree cookies, pumpkin pie, chocolate-covered cherries and lots of turkey and ham! The traditional holiday diet for so many of us, right? And is our belt fitting even tighter early in the New Year?

So time to turn the treadmill or NordicTrack or rowing machine back into a piece of exercise equipment instead of a clothes hanger….or is it?

Wouldn’t it be more fun to exercise with someone you really care about in a Rhoades Car two-seater? Side-by-side so you can talk and reflect on the coming year? And take the kids on a four-seater?

You can do all of the above with a Rhoades Car four wheel bike that drives like a car with extra comfortable seats. Enjoy pedaling in separate gears, and add the pedal-assist motor to help build endurance.

Don’t fail in your New Year’s Resolution to lose weight and get healthier.

“I lost 20lbs the first year I had mine. No other changes other than taking my Rhoades car on all the errands I could.”

Cycling burns 300-500 calories an hour and now it’s something you can do together or as a family, all while supporting American manufacturing!IMG_0158jacey

Announcing the Rhoades SOLARped Series – 100% Powered by the Sun

HENDERSONVILLE, TN — October 16, 2013 —Rhoades Car International, the nation’s leading 4-wheel bicycle manufacturer, today announced the release of a new model series – the Rhoades SOLARped – 100% powered by the sun.

“This is really exciting because we’ve been able to source a flexible, mono-crystalline, 190 watt solar panel which attaches to the existing windshield on our SportPed model,” explained company president, Bill Pomakoy.   “That panel is absolutely amazing because it allows the rider to keep the 24 volt battery system that runs the electric motor charged while on a ride.  I took the two seater out for a 17 mile ride and returned with absolutely no battery drain whatsoever.  I could have gone on for hours and hours more,” added Pomakoy.

SOLARped P2 With the Rhoades SOLARped, customers can have the best of all worlds – pedal assistance when desired from the PD750 electric motor along with a powerful solar panel that keeps the batteries charged and never needs to be plugged in to a wall outlet.  It’s completely off-the-grid!

The Rhoades SOLARped Series is available in one and two person versions.  The 1-person SOLARped P1 uses a 110 watt solar panel to charge the batteries and the 2-person, side-by-side, SOLARped P2 employs the 190 watt panel for additional power.  The company plans to add a 4 person model in 2014.

“There are so many applications for this new technology,” according to Phyllis Shelton, Rhoades Car Vice President of Sales.  “In addition to our residential customers enjoying all of the benefits of the SOLARped, our industrial customers can enjoy the fact that they can purchase a Rhoades SOLARped for SOLARped P1their work fleet at a much lower acquisition cost compared to a golf cart and their employees can get healthy by pedaling.  Plus the annual maintenance costs are minimal for even further savings along with the incredible employee health benefits of riding a Rhoades,” added Shelton.

Rhoades Car International, headquartered in Hendersonville, Tennessee, offers a unique line of four-wheel bicycles for residential and industrial use.  Celebrating its 22nd year in business in 2013, the company relies on local suppliers that share the high quality craftsmanship philosophy to produce custom components for all of its 4-wheel “quad” bikes – proudly made in the USA!

Health, Wealth, Happiness and Future: The Brilliant Benefits of A Rhoades Car with a European Flair

By Guest Writer Julie Stonehill

The SportPed by Rhoades Car – Cool ride – Side-by-Side

The list of personal benefits to be gained from the use of a Rhoades Car seems to be endless. Our happy customers speak for us when it comes to bragging about how great our bikes are – way back in 2012, one customer, David Kong, was so pleased to not be affected by rising gas prices that he wrote in to tell us, and gas prices have risen considerably since then. Whether you’re using it for fun, for travel or a combination of the two, you won’t regret choosing to travel in a Rhoades Car.Sure, there are a few compromises to be made here and there (added weight, etc.), but they are so insignificant compared to the positive attributes of our four-wheeled bicycles that they hardly seem worth considering.

Health

We are often told through the media that we’re unhealthy, and that this has a lot to do with poor diet and not enough exercise. This isn’t very surprising, when you consider that the most exercise we do in a day is walking from the house to the car and the car to work. Finding the time to exercise in a busy schedule can be very difficult, so why not double up a boring commute to work with a pleasant bike ride?

Head to any city in Europe and you are almost sure to see hoards of commuters cycling to work. In London, they tend to look fierce and are clad from head to toe in spandex as they stressfully try to maneuver their way around their big, red buses. We prefer the more relaxed approach taken by the Dutch – take a trip to Amsterdam and you’ll see some very chilled commuters, with their skirts elegantly floating in the breeze and no helmet to mess up their hair.

The Rhoades Cars can give you the benefit of a relaxing commute without the hassle of having to stay balanced on two wheels, or worry too much about the rain. A number of our models come with a canopy, so you can stay dry while enjoying the fresh air.

For a long time, it has been believed that with good physical health and exercise comes good mental health. This is partly thanks to the endorphins released during exercise that are thought to block pain receptors in the brain and allow the pleasure associated with neurotransmitters to become more apparent. Starting your day by releasing these endorphins could make for a much better Monday at work than sitting in a motorcar.

Wealth

The Rhoades Car can keep your wallet healthy on almost every level, too. In the first instance, it’s a lot cheaper to buy than a car – with the average new car costing $30,500 – while giving you a lot of the same conveniences. While most of the time you can choose to use your own power to drive it, if you’re carrying a heavy load you can use the optional electric motor to give you a helping hand, and there are enough seats to use it as a family car. Rhoades Cars are available in 1, 2 and 4 seat versions.  Secondly, it’s a lot cheaper to get insurance coverage for your bike than it is for your car, which means that if something goes wrong, you’re insured without having to pay too much each year. There is less to go wrong on a Rhoades Car than a motorcar, and Rhoades Car carry a two year warranty should anything go wrong in this time frame. Then, of course, there is the matter of gas. When you’re pedaling yourself around, there’s no need to pay huge amounts of money for gas that just keeps going up in price.

Future

In addition to all the personal benefits that come with the Rhoades Car, it is of course better for the environment. The Union of Concerned Scientists reports that every gallon of gas burned in the running of a motor vehicle emits just under 25 pounds of gases – including carbon dioxide – into the atmosphere. Some of this figure they have attributed to the extraction and delivery of gas, but the majority of it comes “right out of a car’s tailpipe”. With so many cars on the road, now is a better time than ever to start swapping those cars for bikes to try and protect the environment for future generations. And you might just have some fun doing it, too.

Rhoades Car – forward thinking!

We have a ground swell of interest building on Facebook and around the country. We’ve had a cult following on the internet for many years. Who are we? We manufacture the Rhoades Car, the four-wheel bike that drives like a car.

Phyllis Shelton, Vice President

Phyllis Shelton, Vice President

Here’s a list of the forward-thinking applications:

Wellness: We make four wheel bikes with 1, 2, or 4 seats that are stable and don’t tip, and we can brand them to wellness programs. The stability expands biking to millions more people. We have a ComfortRide which is a one-person with a 20″ wide seat that is extremely comfortable and easily holds up to 350 lbs. We have a two seater that allows two people or employees to exercise together and have a great visit at the same time! The two-seat ConnectBike (GoBoy) takes up less room that two people riding two-wheel bikes side by side. It’s much more fun to ride a bike outside than in a gym and enjoy the beautiful weather, and many families or companies are close to a greenway or have walk/bike trails already built.

Obesity/Disabled: People who are weight-challenged, have balance issues or certain disabilities can enjoy the experience of biking without the worry of falling. The two- or Polio Survivor Bike with Crutchesfour-seaters allow a healthy person to take a disabled person – even a blind person – out for exercise as well. As an example of forward-thinking, the Governor of Ohio just signed a law recognizing four wheel bikes as perfectly legal wherever 2 or 3 wheel bikes can go. This happened as a result of a family who bought one for their autistic son in Lakewood, Ohio and the local police wrote them a ticket for having a toy on the streets. The disability community fought it and with our help, it wound up on the Governor’s desk who agreed with all of us that it is a full-fledged vehicle.

Industrial Fitness: Another really exciting thing is we offer a complete line of industrial bikes. Companies are using golf carts that allow no exercise or three wheel bikes that tip. IMG_7966Our bikes are safe and include an optional motor for a pedal assist for hauling a lot of weight. So this way employees can exercise throughout the day WHILE THEY ARE WORKING…so it builds fitness right into the job! You can see them here: http://www.rhoadescar.com/go-boy-industrial-series.html

Social connection (“Leave It to Beaver” vs. Virtual Reality): The four seater versions make it fun for the whole family to spend quality time together at a time when families are more fragmented due to kids preferring online games. Kids of all ages love the Rhoades Car. Thanks to the Tennessee Tech senior design engineering class who designed it as a jaceyclass project, this year we are coming out with a four person Connect-Bike (Go-Boy) that will allow all four people to pedal…then four friends, family members or employees can exercise together! The optional motor makes it possible to use them as sustainable transportation in neighborhoods instead of golf carts. We have a number of buyers who use them as their only vehicle in small towns and rural America. We offer single, 7 and 42 speeds. Each person pedals independently — a unique feature as people can pedal side-by-side in a different gear. Made in America: If all of that wasn’t enough, you have to consider that the Rhoades Car is a certified Made in the USA product. Over 80% of our components are made in the USA and we use middle Tennessee suppliers as much as possible. The frame is made of U.S. steel, the most recycled substance in America.

We are just outside of Nashville, giving Tennesseans jobs. The company is 22 years old.   When you look at our website and our active Facebook page, we think you will agree that we are very forward-thinking. Between the obesity crisis, the high cost of gas, the sustainability movement and the popularity of Made in America products, there is a HUGE market for four-wheel bikes….after all, that’s how Henry Ford got started!

Be sure to watch this segment on Tennessee Crossroads which tells the Rhoades Car story

is six short minutes: http://www.rhoadescar.com/in-the-news.html

Company Description: Rhoades Car International manufactures a Certified Made in the USA product — a four wheel bicycle that drives like a car with one, two or four seat capacity with multiple speeds and an optional motor that provides sustainable transportation for families and industry, helps fight obesity, and provides a way for disabled people to exercise safely either alone, depending on their condition, or with loved ones or attendants/caregivers.

Americans See Real Rewards from Workplace Wellness Programs

by Bill Pomakoy, Rhoades Car company president:

An interesting study was just released by Principal Financial (see below) regarding worksite wellness programs.  The study shows that an overwhelming majority of employees embrace appropriate corporate wellness programs.

Rhoades Car has an entire fleet of 4-wheel industrial quadracycles (4-wheel bikes) for companies looking to offer a healthy and efficient means of factory transportation as well as a way for employees to get a healthy workout while on morning/afternoon breaks, lunch, or after shifts.  Call us at 800-531-2737 and ask about our corporate health and wellness program for your company.

Employers offer incentives to increase program participation

DES MOINES, Iowa–(BUSINESS WIRE)–More American workers recognize the rewards of participating in workplace wellness programs, according to the latest Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM: American Workers. Sixty-two percent of workers, up from 55 percent 2011, believe workplace wellness activities are successful in improving health and reducing health risks.

“In the wake of the financial crisis, which has left many companies stretched thin, maintaining a productive workforce is a priority for organizations.”

The index, which surveys American workers at growing businesses with 10-1,000 workers1, is released by the Principal Financial Group® and conducted by Harris Interactive®. These findings focusing specifically on wellness attitudes and behaviors among American workers were taken from the fourth quarter 2012 Index.

By taking advantage of workplace wellness offerings, American employees are approaching their work with more energy and motivation. Fifty-one percent of program participants feel wellness benefits encourage them to work harder and perform better, and another 59 percent of program participants say they have more energy to be productive at work as a result of their participation in employer-sponsored wellness programs.

IMG_0158“As wellness programs become more established in the workplace, we are seeing a growing number of employees appreciate – and expect – that their employer offers these benefits,” said Lee Dukes, president of Principal Wellness Company, a subsidiary of the Principal Financial Group. “In the wake of the financial crisis, which has left many companies stretched thin, maintaining a productive workforce is a priority for organizations.”

Nearly half (45 percent) of employees agree that an employer-sponsored wellness program would encourage them to stay in their current employment situation, up from 40 percent 2011. Additionally, 43 percent of participants say wellness programs have led them to miss fewer days of work, up eight percent from 2011. Despite the apparent benefits, about a third (34 percent) of workers still do not participate in any of the wellness programs offered by their employers.

Employer Incentives on the Rise

As wellness programs become more popular, employers are offering a variety of ways to encourage employees to participate. The survey shows the top three ways employees are encouraged by their employers to participate in wellness programs are: encouragement by management (20 percent), lower health insurance costs to those who participate (20 percent), or allotted time for participation during the workday (20 percent, up from 9 percent). Only a little more than a third (36 percent) say their employers do not offer any encouragement to participate in wellness benefits, a significant divergence from the previous three years, when about half of participants said their employer did nothing to encourage wellness program participation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAParticipants also cited an increase in the following employer incentives:

Seventeen percent, up from 9 percent the previous year, say their employer offers contributions into a health savings account or health reimbursement account;

Sixteen percent, up from 12 percent the previous year, say their employer provides other financial incentives such as gift certificates or discounts for those who participate;

And 10 percent, up from 6 percent the previous year, report that their employer rewards additional paid time off from work to participants.

“It’s in every employer’s interest to have healthier, happier, more productive employees,” said Dukes. “Employers have to do more than offer wellness programs; in order to see the benefits, they have to incent participation.”
