Quadricycle Manufacturer Unveils Newest Model for Four Riders, Enables All Passengers to Pedal

HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — Rhoades Car International, the nation’s leading 4-wheel bicycle manufacturer, today announced the release of its first model that allows all four passengers to pedal, the GoBoy X4.Rhoades Car GoBoy X4

President Bill Pomakoy says “We’ve had many requests for a 4-person model that allows all passengers to pedal. With some help from Mechanical Engineering students at Tennessee Tech University, we now have this model. Thanks to the double-sprocket free wheel system, the people in front can pedal in separate gears and the people in back simply pedal in tandem with them.” College of Engineering Dean Joseph Rencis said the commitment of Rhoades Car to TTU in this joint project “underscores my belief that we are educating our young people the right way.”

“The GoBoy X4 is perfect for a family with older kids,” says Phyllis Shelton, VP of Marketing. “According to the Centers for Disease Control, the obesity rate in the U.S. has reached an all-time high with 2/3 of Americans overweight and 1/3 obese. This bike promotes a great way to lose weight and get healthier while enjoying quality time with family.”

Lawrence Vivenzio, Director of Inside Sales, says the GoBoy X4 is great for bike rental and worksite wellness programs. “And if a company is looking for a healthy way for four employees to travel around a large plant or factory, the GoBoy X4 with its 28″ x 15″ cargo area is a perfect fit.” GoBoy X4 fits in a pickup

At only 38″ wide, the GoBoy X4 is at home on greenways, parks or college campuses, and fits easily into the back of a pickup. It joins the 1 and 2 passenger GoBoy series.

Rhoades Car International offers a unique line of 1, 2 and 4-person quadricycles with multiple speeds that provides sustainable transportation for families and industry, helps fight obesity, and provides a way for disabled people to exercise safely either alone or with loved ones or caregivers. A pedal-assist motor is an option for most models and some can be solar-powered. Celebrating its 23rd year in business in 2014, the company relies on American suppliers as much as possible that share the high quality craftsmanship philosophy to produce custom components for all of its 4-wheel “quad” bikes. Rhoades Car is privately owned.

Man Loses 155 Lbs. in 8 Months and Other Customer Stories

It’s not just about the money. We as a company treasure testimonials from our customers who are having fun on their Rhoades Car, while truly being helped.  So while we tell you about our September Special, here are four that really touched us. The first two are recent blogs you may have missed, and the last two just happened.

  • Man from White House, TN Loses 155 Lbs. in Eight Months.–  We met Dean Cagley in January of this year in a wheel chair. With spinal and disk issues, he was headed for surgery. He now barely uses a cane and has avoided surgery. He rides 10 miles a day and has been able to go back to work. His wife shares half of the ride and has lost 50 lbs. without doing anything else!
  • Autistic Man in 12th Year of Riding a Rhoades Car Twelve years ago, the Reid family in Oak Forest, IL pooled their savings to buy their autistic son a Rhoades Car. It pulled him out of depression from losing his job and he has been riding ever since. Bill, his mother and sister visited the Rhoades Car factory last week to pick up a new tire, the first part the bike has needed in the entire 12 years!

So it’s not just about the money, but everybody loves to save money. So if you’ve been thinking about a Rhoades Car, now is the time with our September special:

  • Toni Braun in Altona, Manitoba bought a Rhoades Car six months ago.  A severe head injury forced him to give up riding a two wheel bike due to balance issues. He had heard about Rhoades Car many years ago and credits God with helping him find us. He is so happy with his Rhoades Car as his main transportation PLUS he gets to spend time with his wife and other people he picks up along the way. He was especially glad it arrived fully assembled and said, “I was so impressed with the quality workmanship that went into this thing.” You can see the entire story here.

  • A couple in Jonesboro, TN picked up their bike two weeks ago.  The husband is a professor at East Tennessee State University and a psychologist. He was an avid cyclist until he had 2 knee surgeries and 3 back surgeries, the last one leaving his left thigh really weak. He said the Rhoades Car is working out his left leg perfectly and he is regaining his strength. He and his wife SuSu are having the time of their lives riding all over downtown Jonesboro. They have been married 29 years and love riding side by side, each pedaling in a comfortable gear, and being able to talk, instead of riding tandem.

Man from White House TN loses 215 lbs. in 13 Months (updated)

Dean Cagley from White House Tennessee paid a visit to the Rhoades Car factory this week to pick up a couple of parts for his Rhoades Car and update us on his health status. Mr. Cagley is working very hard to overcome spinal stenosis and several herniated disks and doing everything he can to avoid surgery. Losing weight is a very important part of his health plan. Dean proudly reports losing 155 lbs. since January 2014 and credits his 2 person Cycle Car with much of his success. [UPDATE: Dean reports 215 lbs. through February 2015!] He lives at the mid-point of the White House, TN greenway, so he can enjoy a 5 1/2 mile ride round trip in either direction. He said the greenway is wide enough that two Cycle Cars would fit on it and sent us the picture below to prove it! He pedals alone for the morning trip and his wife Judy joins him at the end of the day after she gets home from work. That gives him a good ten miles a day on his Rhoades Car.

Judy has lost 50 lbs in the same time period and she hasn’t been really trying! Best of all, in addition to the exercise, the Cagleys enjoy spending quality time together.

Save Money on Your Energy Bill

Energy TipsHome Energy Saving Tips

Welcome to the most wonderful time of the year. Or, at least the most wonderful time if you enjoy hot weather!

In most of the United States, July and August are the months where people will experience the highest temperatures of the year, we certainly do in Tennessee. While that’s great news for warm-weather lovers, it’s usually not-so-great news for your energy bill.

Rhoades Car owners understand the importance of being energy efficient –one of the reasons our customers love our vehicles is the ability to use them in place of a traditional vehicle for short trips and errands in the neighborhood.

To help battle the heat, here are some tips to help you keep your home comfortable and more efficient. (Note: These tips are best read next to a pool with a large glass of cold water or lemonade!)

1. Turn up the thermostat.

Bump up the temperature in your home to as high as you can tolerate. Depending on the heat outside, you may be surprised at what actually feels comfortable! Pacific Power suggests 78 degrees is good for while you’re home; 85 degrees when you’re not. That will lessen your air conditioner usage and decrease your energy bill. Consider installing a programmable thermostat to help in this process, if you don’t have one already.

In addition, Energy.gov recommends not turning your thermostat exceptionally low to cool the house down quickly. Not only is it ineffective, it creates additional costs.

2. Use fans.

So now that you’re adjusting the temperature on your thermostat, how can you maintain the comfort in your home? By making better use of fans. Fans are much more energy-efficient than air conditioning. In addition, fans are only effective for cooling while you’re in the room. So if you’re not in the room, turn off the fan and take advantage of more savings!

3. Keep your blinds closed during the day.

Yes, sunlight is nice, but summer heat is not. If you’re not going to be home during the day, keep your drapes and blinds closed. This will help prevent a bit of daytime heating and make cooling your home in the evening much more efficient.

4. Become a night washer.

Making your home more energy efficient in the summer months isn’t just about your heating and cooling systems. It’s also about your other appliances as well. By running your washing machine, dryer and dishwasher at night, you’ll minimize the impact that running those appliances has on the cooling of your home.

In addition, consider skipping the drying cycle on the dishwasher and drying dishes by hand or allowing your clothes to air or line dry. And try to minimize the number of loads on each appliance by waiting until you have a full load of laundry or a full dishwasher.
But definitely use the dishwasher – it’s more efficient in water usage than your best efforts at hand-washing those plates and pans!

5. Buy more refrigerated food.

OK, so what does grocery shopping have to do with energy efficiency? Believe it or not, the amount of food in your refrigerator impacts the amount of energy it needs to keep food cold. By having more food in the fridge, you’ll prevent it from warming up as quickly when you open the door to grab that aforementioned glass of lemonade or to prepare a delicious summer meal.

6. Get to know your microwave.

It’s not just the dishwasher in your kitchen. The most obvious sources of heating in your kitchen are the stove and oven. So, when possible, instead of using your oven, opt for the microwave. According to the California Consumer Energy Center, a microwave uses two-thirds less energy than the stove. And it will keep your house cooler, too!

So give these tips a try and watch your energy bill to count the savings! Do you have any unique energy-saving ideas? Tried something that really works? Share it with us in the comments below. We’d love to hear your innovative solutions to beating the heat!

Back to School Lunches

file2551276292157Healthy Back-to-School Lunch ideas

Hard to believe it, but for many of us, it’s already time to wrap up the back-to-school shopping and start packing those backpacks for another new school year. (Where did the summer go?)

One of the bigger challenges when it comes to school time – especially with older children and teens – is creating a healthy, tasty packed lunch. Eating a healthy lunch is particularly important for middle and high schoolers. Not only does it increase energy, it begins building the foundation of healthy eating as they continue to grow and eventually graduate and head to college. It’s shocking to know that childhood obesity has more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the past 30 years. Let’s get them eating healthy creative lunches.

But turkey sandwiches and celery sticks can be boring, right?

So here are some more creative – yet not overly complicated – lunch offerings for the tween and teen in your life.

Chicken Pita

Suggested by Seventeen magazine, the chicken pita replaces the basic sandwich with a simple yogurt-based chicken salad (no mayonnaise!) and a slice of pita bread.

Bon Appetit magazine offers several tasty and fun suggestions, including this twist on a traditional BLT. What’s the A you ask? Avocado, of course. By creating this as a wrap and not a sandwich, it also makes it easier to transport – simply wrap in aluminum foil, parchment or wax paper and you’re good to go!

Avocado/Carrot/Cucumber Sushi

This one wins for appearance, hands down. Start with sushi rice, then roll avocado, carrots and cucumber. Don’t forget a packet or two of soy sauce as well. It’ll be the hit of the lunchroom!

BBQ Chicken Sloppy Joes

It’s a sandwich that has the luxury of being delicious, whether it’s served hot or cold. And it begins with a simple trip to the grocery store for a rotisserie chicken. Shred the chicken, then add carrots and barbecue sauce and some cilantro or parsley for good measure. Bon Appetit recommends a whole wheat bun, but this would work in a wrap or on sliced bread as well – just pack the meat separately to avoid a soggy mess!

Soba Salad with Chicken and Cabbage

The problem with packing a traditional salad for lunch is the dressing. If you dress the salad before scrambling to the bus stop in the morning, you’ll have soggy greens. And packing dressings can be tricky and lead to accidental sticky lunch bags. Enter this salad, which solves the dressing issue by making its bed of cabbage rather than lettuce, which reduces the sogginess. It’s light and crunchy and crisp … and full of flavor.

Pizza Pasta Salad

Another fun option, especially for teens, is this unique twist on pizza from BBC’s GoodFood. It includes pesto and tomatoes and mozzarella cheese and basil and is not only tasty, but can be a beautiful presentation as well.

Or, if that one’s not quite doing it for your favorite high schooler, here’s a variation from Real Simple magazine, which combines pasta, spinach, tomatoes and salami.

See? Healthy lunches don’t have to be boring at all! Combine healthy eating with a Rhoades Car in your life, and your kids will be much healthier.

Spring into Summer with Rhoades Car

The question we hear frequently is “How did the Prince Harry PR work out for you?” (For those of you who missed it, Prince Harry rode a Rhoades Car at the grand opening of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on April 4th.) I just got back from the regular meeting of Hendersonville, TN manufacturers and fielded that question three times. The official answer is, it worked out GREAT with many new friends finding the Rhoades Car Facebook page and website! It especially worked out well with the Royal Spring Special in May that offered free shipping or $500 in free upgrades, as this caused many of our new friends to become Rhoades Car owners. However, that was a special promotion and promotions do have to come to an end. BUT . . . it doesn’t mean we can’t have another promotion that’s equally as fun!

Our “Spring into Summer” promotion until June 30th provides a choice between a Visa, Home Depot or Amazon gift card or an even greater amount of free upgrades, so it is easier than ever to join the elite club of Rhoades Car Owners.

But don’t stop there. While you are on our website checking out this new promotion, don’t miss the new blogs we’ve been posting.

Nashville CBS affiliate picks up Prince Harry story

And the beat goes on!

Yesterday was another exciting day at Rhoades Car as the NewsChannel 5 (WTVF) swarmed our factory interviewing us and shooting pictures and video. Imagine our amazement when our story wound up as the lead story on the 5:00 news.

Our challenge to the Mayor of Nashville still stands.  If Prince Harry and the Mayor of London can ride a Rhoades Car, why can’t he? What do you say Mayor Dean?

Of course, we couldn’t let them leave without a group shot of the news team and some of our employees: L to R: Lawrence Vivenzio (sales), Holly Skinner (customer service), Chris Spann (master builder), Holden Thompson (builder), Phyllis Shelton (co-owner), Alex Lucas (cameraman/producer), Lena Rose (assistant) and reporter Adam Ghassemi. Rhoades Car Official Greeter Jackson is the focal point, don’t you agree?

Royalty Rides a Rhoades Car

If you love royalty as much as we do, you will be excited to see Prince Harry and Mayor of London Boris Johnson celebrating the opening of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on a Rhoades Car. Rhoades Car made its London debut yesterday with none other than Prince Harry and London Mayor Boris Johnson riding a 2 person Cycle Car on the eve of the grand opening of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, the newest and largest park in London.

How did this possibly happen? It started with a sale to Bikeworks UK which was then picked up by Motivate East, a free inclusive sports participation project for disabled people who engaged Prince Harry and Mayor Boris Johnson in the video below. (Go to 1:04 in the video for The Ride)

You just call the order into Rhoades Car and we handle the transaction, place the order into our production schedule and ship the order directly to your customer (or to you, if you prefer).

The best news is that you’ll make a HIGH COMMISSION on every sale you make, and you don’t have to worry about anything else! There is even a financing program available for credit qualified customers at your events.
