Health, Wealth, Happiness and Future: The Brilliant Benefits of A Rhoades Car with a European Flair

By Guest Writer Julie Stonehill

The SportPed by Rhoades Car – Cool ride – Side-by-Side

The list of personal benefits to be gained from the use of a Rhoades Car seems to be endless. Our happy customers speak for us when it comes to bragging about how great our bikes are – way back in 2012, one customer, David Kong, was so pleased to not be affected by rising gas prices that he wrote in to tell us, and gas prices have risen considerably since then. Whether you’re using it for fun, for travel or a combination of the two, you won’t regret choosing to travel in a Rhoades Car.Sure, there are a few compromises to be made here and there (added weight, etc.), but they are so insignificant compared to the positive attributes of our four-wheeled bicycles that they hardly seem worth considering.

Health

We are often told through the media that we’re unhealthy, and that this has a lot to do with poor diet and not enough exercise. This isn’t very surprising, when you consider that the most exercise we do in a day is walking from the house to the car and the car to work. Finding the time to exercise in a busy schedule can be very difficult, so why not double up a boring commute to work with a pleasant bike ride?

Head to any city in Europe and you are almost sure to see hoards of commuters cycling to work. In London, they tend to look fierce and are clad from head to toe in spandex as they stressfully try to maneuver their way around their big, red buses. We prefer the more relaxed approach taken by the Dutch – take a trip to Amsterdam and you’ll see some very chilled commuters, with their skirts elegantly floating in the breeze and no helmet to mess up their hair.

The Rhoades Cars can give you the benefit of a relaxing commute without the hassle of having to stay balanced on two wheels, or worry too much about the rain. A number of our models come with a canopy, so you can stay dry while enjoying the fresh air.

For a long time, it has been believed that with good physical health and exercise comes good mental health. This is partly thanks to the endorphins released during exercise that are thought to block pain receptors in the brain and allow the pleasure associated with neurotransmitters to become more apparent. Starting your day by releasing these endorphins could make for a much better Monday at work than sitting in a motorcar.

Wealth

The Rhoades Car can keep your wallet healthy on almost every level, too. In the first instance, it’s a lot cheaper to buy than a car – with the average new car costing $30,500 – while giving you a lot of the same conveniences. While most of the time you can choose to use your own power to drive it, if you’re carrying a heavy load you can use the optional electric motor to give you a helping hand, and there are enough seats to use it as a family car. Rhoades Cars are available in 1, 2 and 4 seat versions.  Secondly, it’s a lot cheaper to get insurance coverage for your bike than it is for your car, which means that if something goes wrong, you’re insured without having to pay too much each year. There is less to go wrong on a Rhoades Car than a motorcar, and Rhoades Car carry a two year warranty should anything go wrong in this time frame. Then, of course, there is the matter of gas. When you’re pedaling yourself around, there’s no need to pay huge amounts of money for gas that just keeps going up in price.

Future

In addition to all the personal benefits that come with the Rhoades Car, it is of course better for the environment. The Union of Concerned Scientists reports that every gallon of gas burned in the running of a motor vehicle emits just under 25 pounds of gases – including carbon dioxide – into the atmosphere. Some of this figure they have attributed to the extraction and delivery of gas, but the majority of it comes “right out of a car’s tailpipe”. With so many cars on the road, now is a better time than ever to start swapping those cars for bikes to try and protect the environment for future generations. And you might just have some fun doing it, too.

Rhoades Car – forward thinking!

We have a ground swell of interest building on Facebook and around the country. We’ve had a cult following on the internet for many years. Who are we? We manufacture the Rhoades Car, the four-wheel bike that drives like a car.

Phyllis Shelton, Vice President

Phyllis Shelton, Vice President

Here’s a list of the forward-thinking applications:

Wellness: We make four wheel bikes with 1, 2, or 4 seats that are stable and don’t tip, and we can brand them to wellness programs. The stability expands biking to millions more people. We have a ComfortRide which is a one-person with a 20″ wide seat that is extremely comfortable and easily holds up to 350 lbs. We have a two seater that allows two people or employees to exercise together and have a great visit at the same time! The two-seat ConnectBike (GoBoy) takes up less room that two people riding two-wheel bikes side by side. It’s much more fun to ride a bike outside than in a gym and enjoy the beautiful weather, and many families or companies are close to a greenway or have walk/bike trails already built.

Obesity/Disabled: People who are weight-challenged, have balance issues or certain disabilities can enjoy the experience of biking without the worry of falling. The two- or Polio Survivor Bike with Crutchesfour-seaters allow a healthy person to take a disabled person – even a blind person – out for exercise as well. As an example of forward-thinking, the Governor of Ohio just signed a law recognizing four wheel bikes as perfectly legal wherever 2 or 3 wheel bikes can go. This happened as a result of a family who bought one for their autistic son in Lakewood, Ohio and the local police wrote them a ticket for having a toy on the streets. The disability community fought it and with our help, it wound up on the Governor’s desk who agreed with all of us that it is a full-fledged vehicle.

Industrial Fitness: Another really exciting thing is we offer a complete line of industrial bikes. Companies are using golf carts that allow no exercise or three wheel bikes that tip. IMG_7966Our bikes are safe and include an optional motor for a pedal assist for hauling a lot of weight. So this way employees can exercise throughout the day WHILE THEY ARE WORKING…so it builds fitness right into the job! You can see them here: http://www.rhoadescar.com/go-boy-industrial-series.html

Social connection (“Leave It to Beaver” vs. Virtual Reality): The four seater versions make it fun for the whole family to spend quality time together at a time when families are more fragmented due to kids preferring online games. Kids of all ages love the Rhoades Car. Thanks to the Tennessee Tech senior design engineering class who designed it as a jaceyclass project, this year we are coming out with a four person Connect-Bike (Go-Boy) that will allow all four people to pedal…then four friends, family members or employees can exercise together! The optional motor makes it possible to use them as sustainable transportation in neighborhoods instead of golf carts. We have a number of buyers who use them as their only vehicle in small towns and rural America. We offer single, 7 and 42 speeds. Each person pedals independently — a unique feature as people can pedal side-by-side in a different gear. Made in America: If all of that wasn’t enough, you have to consider that the Rhoades Car is a certified Made in the USA product. Over 80% of our components are made in the USA and we use middle Tennessee suppliers as much as possible. The frame is made of U.S. steel, the most recycled substance in America.

We are just outside of Nashville, giving Tennesseans jobs. The company is 22 years old.   When you look at our website and our active Facebook page, we think you will agree that we are very forward-thinking. Between the obesity crisis, the high cost of gas, the sustainability movement and the popularity of Made in America products, there is a HUGE market for four-wheel bikes….after all, that’s how Henry Ford got started!

Be sure to watch this segment on Tennessee Crossroads which tells the Rhoades Car story

is six short minutes: http://www.rhoadescar.com/in-the-news.html

Company Description: Rhoades Car International manufactures a Certified Made in the USA product — a four wheel bicycle that drives like a car with one, two or four seat capacity with multiple speeds and an optional motor that provides sustainable transportation for families and industry, helps fight obesity, and provides a way for disabled people to exercise safely either alone, depending on their condition, or with loved ones or attendants/caregivers.

Americans See Real Rewards from Workplace Wellness Programs

by Bill Pomakoy, Rhoades Car company president:

An interesting study was just released by Principal Financial (see below) regarding worksite wellness programs.  The study shows that an overwhelming majority of employees embrace appropriate corporate wellness programs.

Rhoades Car has an entire fleet of 4-wheel industrial quadracycles (4-wheel bikes) for companies looking to offer a healthy and efficient means of factory transportation as well as a way for employees to get a healthy workout while on morning/afternoon breaks, lunch, or after shifts.  Call us at 800-531-2737 and ask about our corporate health and wellness program for your company.

IMG_7966Here’s the article:

Employers offer incentives to increase program participation

DES MOINES, Iowa–(BUSINESS WIRE)–More American workers recognize the rewards of participating in workplace wellness programs, according to the latest Principal Financial Well-Being IndexSM: American Workers. Sixty-two percent of workers, up from 55 percent 2011, believe workplace wellness activities are successful in improving health and reducing health risks.

“In the wake of the financial crisis, which has left many companies stretched thin, maintaining a productive workforce is a priority for organizations.”

The index, which surveys American workers at growing businesses with 10-1,000 workers1, is released by the Principal Financial Group® and conducted by Harris Interactive®. These findings focusing specifically on wellness attitudes and behaviors among American workers were taken from the fourth quarter 2012 Index.

By taking advantage of workplace wellness offerings, American employees are approaching their work with more energy and motivation. Fifty-one percent of program participants feel wellness benefits encourage them to work harder and perform better, and another 59 percent of program participants say they have more energy to be productive at work as a result of their participation in employer-sponsored wellness programs.

IMG_0158“As wellness programs become more established in the workplace, we are seeing a growing number of employees appreciate – and expect – that their employer offers these benefits,” said Lee Dukes, president of Principal Wellness Company, a subsidiary of the Principal Financial Group. “In the wake of the financial crisis, which has left many companies stretched thin, maintaining a productive workforce is a priority for organizations.”

Nearly half (45 percent) of employees agree that an employer-sponsored wellness program would encourage them to stay in their current employment situation, up from 40 percent 2011. Additionally, 43 percent of participants say wellness programs have led them to miss fewer days of work, up eight percent from 2011. Despite the apparent benefits, about a third (34 percent) of workers still do not participate in any of the wellness programs offered by their employers.

Employer Incentives on the Rise

As wellness programs become more popular, employers are offering a variety of ways to encourage employees to participate. The survey shows the top three ways employees are encouraged by their employers to participate in wellness programs are: encouragement by management (20 percent), lower health insurance costs to those who participate (20 percent), or allotted time for participation during the workday (20 percent, up from 9 percent). Only a little more than a third (36 percent) say their employers do not offer any encouragement to participate in wellness benefits, a significant divergence from the previous three years, when about half of participants said their employer did nothing to encourage wellness program participation.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAParticipants also cited an increase in the following employer incentives:

Seventeen percent, up from 9 percent the previous year, say their employer offers contributions into a health savings account or health reimbursement account;

Sixteen percent, up from 12 percent the previous year, say their employer provides other financial incentives such as gift certificates or discounts for those who participate;

And 10 percent, up from 6 percent the previous year, report that their employer rewards additional paid time off from work to participants.

“It’s in every employer’s interest to have healthier, happier, more productive employees,” said Dukes. “Employers have to do more than offer wellness programs; in order to see the benefits, they have to incent participation.”

Rhoades Car Customer Not Worried About Soaring Gas Prices!

By Beth Baker

Director of Customer Relations, Rhoades Car International

David King of central Wyoming isn’t worried about $5 a gallon gas — because he’s been riding a Rhoades Car for the past 13 years!  A few days ago, we received this unsolicited email from David:

I just thought you might like to know that my single-seat Rhoades Car, which is 13 years old, is still rolling along the highways and byways of central Wyoming. And I, at the age of 72, am still happily pushing its pedals. Thank you for a helluva lotta enjoyment and good health over the years!”

We’re thrilled that David has had 13 years of Rhoades Car enjoyment and wish him many more.  Did you notice that he mentioned “enjoyment and health” in his email?  Not only is he saving money on gas by riding a Rhoades, but he is staying in shape and having a great time!

Funny thing about rising gas prices – as gas prices soar so do sales of Rhoades Cars.  So far in 2012, sales are up over 100%.  Why?  Because riding a Rhoades can be a solution for many people as an alternative means of transportation in order to save money on gas AND get much needed exercise. Add in our 1 hp electric-assist motor option and it becomes a hybrid (pedal power and electric motor combo). That is one of the major reasons we were named Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year in 2011.

According to a recent study from the Oil Price Information Service, fuel prices are up 13.6% from a year ago and 76% higher than in December 2008. A FoxNews.com article earlier this week stated, “Americans spent 8.4 percent of their household income on gasoline last year when gas averaged $3.51 a gallon — that’s double the percentage a decade ago.”  No way around it – we’re headed for a big spike in gas prices again in 2012.  It’s time to look for alternatives!

Although the majority of our sales are here in the USA, we have individuals, couples and families all over the world ordering our 4-wheel bikes and many of them are adding our electric-assist motor option.  With gasoline prices climbing dramatically, gas savings is important but family health and overall fitness weigh heavily in the decision too.  So riding a Rhoades is a true win-win-win!  You get gas savings, exercise AND family fun.  After all, we need more Leave it to Beaver and less Virtual Reality in our society.  This is a great way for families to recapture that special time together.

A few weeks ago, Rhoades Car was featured on the Emmy award-winning and #1 locally produced PBS show in the country – Tennessee Crossroads.  They did a great job of showing how we are a Certified Made-in-The-USA product so when you purchase a Rhoades Car, you are supporting American workers. Here’s a link to the 6 ½ minute segment –http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXN7Rv1Ly-c&feature=plcp&context=C33f14bfUDOEgsToPDskJxOGrtb3kGPRkGT3KHdg-M

So whether you are young or old, married or single, short or tall, overweight or skin and bones, have a small family or a large family, there’s a 1, 2 or 4 seat Rhoades Car 4-wheel bike just for you.  Just ask David King who is in his 13th year of riding his 1-person Rhoades Car!

Electric Bike Popularity Growing

by Bill Pomakoy

President, Rhoades Car International

Electric Bicycle (aka “e-bike”) sales are growing dramatically worldwide.  As a matter of fact, at Rhoades Car in 2011, there was an electric-assist motor on approximately 20% of the 4-wheel quardacycles that left our Hendersonville, TN factory – up from just under 10% in 2010.  It shows that many people are not only looking for an alternate means of transportation – but many like an optional boost of power when needed without adding to the carbon footprint issue.

The 1/1/12 issue of Bicycling Retailer has a good article on electric bike sales that is really geared to retailers but the facts are the facts – whether you are a retailer or the end purchaser.  Although they don’t state it in the article, it is obvious that the results are based on e-bike sales in the US, not international sales. Some of the findings may surprise you:

  • Most purchasers of electric bikes are generally NOT cyclists and most have not ridden a bike in years
  • Most purchasers are couples and they typically buy two e-bikes (not always at the same time)
  • The average e-bike owner is 59+
  • More than half of e-bike sales are to women and they expect a wide range of colors to choose from
  • People who purchase e-bikes are very social and tell their friends about their purchase

For me, the most surprising statement in the article was this one —  “While buyers might justify their purchase with saving money on gas, getting exercise and being green, the real reason they buy an e-bike is plain and simple: FUN!”  Who can argue with that? We’re all looking for ways to have fun, right?  More on that later.

The bottom line seems to be that electric bike sales should continue to grow in the US and around the world.  In a 2010 published report, PikeResearch concluded that “The worldwide electric two-wheel vehicle market is expected to grow at a compound annual rate of 9% through 2016″.

To put things in perspective, according to the latest Electric Bikes Worldwide Report, US e-Bike sales were projected to hit 220,000 units in 2009, a two-year sales increase of 83 percent from 2007. In that same time period, 750,000 e-Bike sales were forecasted for Europe- up from 250,000 units in 2007.  But guess who leads the pack on e-bike production AND usage?  You guessed it – China.  The China Bicycle Association reported that China has 70 million electric bikes on the road and 1,400 electric bicycle manufacturers who produce around 5.5 million e-bike units a year.

The unfortunate part of the message once again – just like with regular bicycles – is that the vast majority of e-bikes are NOT produced in the USA.  If you read my June blog , you know that I a firm believer that we need to get back to making products right here in the USA – just like we do at Rhoades Car. We’re the exception – and we need to be the rule!

Here’s how we do it at Rhoades Car:

  • All Rhoades Car major components, including proprietary steel frames, are made in Tennessee – not in China or Taiwan
  • Powder coating is applied in Madison, Tennessee
  • Seats are manufactured in Memphis, TN and soon in Augusta, GA
  • Mag wheels are manufactured in Redding, CA
  • Canopies are handmade by a small upholstery shop in Hendersonville, TN
  • Shipping crate material is purchased locally
  • Axles, steering columns, tirods and all proprietary machined parts are manufactured by various small companies – ALL located in the United States of America

I promised to get back to the “FUN” comment earlier in the blog.  It should come as no surprise that the most popular models at Rhoades Car are our 2-person side-by-side models (GoBoy, SportPed and Cycle Car Series all offer 2-person models.  SportPed and CycleCar Series both offer 4-person family models).  The reason IS the “FUN” factor just like the Bicycle Retailer article suggests.  Our 2-person quadracycles are so much more FUN than riding on separate bikes or even a tandem.  Why?  Because you can have conversation with your pedal-mate because you’re side-by-side AND you’re getting exercise.  How’s that for a win-win? Plus, you can add the electric-assist electric motor feature if you want a little help with those hills or you are just plum worn out 5 miles into the ride and want a little help getting home.

As I wrote back in the June blog, “It is possible to produce products that are truly made in the USA and every time we do it benefits American families.  We do it at Rhoades Car and there are many more companies out there just like us that need your support.  If we can all focus on buying American-made products, we can get the USA back to once again being the global leader. But it will take sacrifices to get there.

It’s a New Year and time to refocus on buying American-made products.   Come on now, you read the back of the food labels when you are looking to cut calories or check the sodium content so you can do it to look for American-made products.  So please, the next time you go to a store to purchase an item, read the label and buy the one that says – “Proudly Made in the USA”.

Happy New Year everyone! And be sure to visit us often at www.RhoadesCar.com.

Rhoades Car International Wins Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year Award

For Immediate Release
May 2, 2011

Rhoades Car International Wins Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year Award

HENDERSONVILLE, TN — May 2, 2011 — Rhoades Car International, the nation’s leading 4-wheel bicycle manufacturer, received the coveted Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year Award at the Green Business Leadership Award ceremony on April 22, 2011 at the Nashville Convention Center.

Rhoades Car was recognized along with nine other individuals or organizations in various categories, including Nissan, for its Leaf electric car.  The awards were sponsored by Lipscomb University’s Institute for Sustainable Practice and the award winners were selected by a committee of business and non-profit representatives from within a statewide sustainable business roundtable.

“This award means so much because we have been on a mission to bring a safe and sustainable means of 4-wheel transportation to all industries,” noted Bill Pomakoy, President of Rhoades Car International.  “Rhoades Car 4-wheel Industrial Bikes are the perfect solution for industrial facilities looking to reduce emissions as well as lower factory vehicle acquisition and maintenance costs and the award acknowledges that.  I’m so proud of the entire Rhoades Car team who worked so hard to achieve this milestone,” he added.

Sustainability encompasses more than renewable products and energy.  Rhoades Car International has a multi-faceted approach to product development which includes innovative design, sustainable techniques, and a broad range of thoughtful uses for companies and individuals desiring to create a more sustainable environment.

The Rhoades Car Industrial line of 4-wheel bicycles supports sustainability beyond the traditional replacement of equipment within an industry.  According to Rhoades Car’s sustainability coordinator, Julie Alexander, the industrial line, when placed within a daily working routine for employees, induces a sustainable workforce.  “When a company shows they care about their employees’ health and wellness, employees have a more intrinsic reason for remaining in their current positions.  Exercise can boost employee morale, reduce stress, absenteeism, employee turnover, and overall costs of operations because companies who care create a sustainable workforce.”

In conjunction with creating a sustainable workforce, businesses can work with some insurance companies to reduce their insurance premiums by offering opportunities during the work day to exercise.  Rhoades Car bicycles provide employers and employees with the ability to exercise throughout the work day and the ability to increase profit margins. “Rhoades Car strives to convey an overall approach to wellness in the workplace as an opportunity to have fun while reaping the benefits of increased morale when utilizing these innovative 4-wheel bicycles during work hours,” continues Alexander.  “Being named the Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year is an honor, and hopefully will allow more businesses to hear about opportunities the Rhoades Car 4-wheel bikes offer working environments.”

Rhoades Car International, headquartered in Hendersonville, Tennessee, offers a unique line of four-wheel bicycles for residential and industrial use.  Celebrating its 20th year in business in 2011, the company relies on local suppliers that share the high quality craftsmanship philosophy to produce custom components for all of its 4-wheel “quad” bikes – proudly made in the USA!

Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year Award goes to (drum roll) RHOADES CAR

By Phyllis Shelton, VP Sales & Marketing

What a month it’s been for Rhoades Car!

I have the pleasure of announcing that Rhoades Car International received the coveted Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year Award at the Green Business Leadership Award ceremony last weekend at the Nashville Convention Center.

This award comes at a great time for Rhoades Car because it confirms that our mission to provide safe, reliable and sustainable transportation to individuals and industry is right on track. And, in an industrial environment, Rhoades Car pedal-powered vehicles support employee wellness as well.

Why all the buzz about sustainability and wellness? Because, as a nation, we have to collectively do something about two of the most challenging issues in our country today:

1. find alternative means of transportation in order to reduce our dependence on foreign oil; and

2. find ways to favorably impact the obesity problem in the US (health care crisis).

I don’t think there are too many people who would argue that the two issues mentioned above need to be addressed. It’s just a matter of how they are addressed, right? I’m not suggesting that riding a Rhoades Car will be the end-all for solving both issues, but it sure will go a long way. How, you ask? Because riding a Rhoades will get a person in better shape simply because of the exercise value (whether at work or at home). Plus, some health insurance companies are offering discounts on health insurance premiums for employers who implement a corporate wellness program. Now add in the fact that a Rhoades Car runs on either pedal-power alone or can be assisted by our optional 750 watt electric motor and there you have it – we just reduced our dependence on foreign oil, lowered our health insurance premiums AND shed a few pounds in the process. How’s THAT for a win-win-win?

I could easily add a #3 to the “challenges” list above. And I would put it in bold:

3. stop depending on other countries to manufacture the majority of the products we use!

If a small company like Rhoades Car can survive 20 years in a market where 99.53% of its competitor’s products are made in China and Taiwan (that’s an actual statistic by the National Bicycle Dealers Association), then other companies can do it too. Our products are proudly Made in the USA so people and organizations that purchase one of our quad bikes are keeping American families employed! It just doesn’t get any better than that!

Receiving the Tennessee Green Business Innovator of the Year Award means so much to all of us at Rhoades Car. It gives us even more incentive to bring new and innovative 4-wheel bike designs to market. Wait until you hear about our new solar power roof design that will be announced this fall! And, by the way… it too will be proudly made in the United States of America!

Rhoades Car International is the People’s Choice!

Written by: Julie Alexander

Recently, Rhoades Car President Bill Pomakoy, and Vice President of Marketing Phyllis Shelton attended the Eco-Expo in Chattanooga, TN to showcase the variety of 4-wheel bicycles Rhoades Car International creates.

The Eco-Expo is in its third year running, and its purpose is to educate patrons from Tennessee and Georgia about “products and services they can use to live greener lives, save money by living green, and participate in efforts to keep the region green,” (ChattanoogaEcoExpo.com).

Rhoades Car was a featured vendor at the expo, along with several other green companies showcasing their products and services.  The 2011 Expo spotlighted award-winning exhibits in four categories: creativity, resourcefulness, sustainability, and people’s choice.  The awards were designed by a local artist named Michael Wimmer who is known for his recycled and re-purposed 3-D artwork.

There were a thousand plus visitors to the expo this past year, and every one of them were asked to rate the vendors/exhibitors.  Amazingly, amongst several incredibly innovative companies, Rhoades Car International was voted, overwhelmingly, the People’s Choice Award!

It was an honor and a privilege to be named the People’s Choice, and we will not take it for granted.  We will continually strive to enrich people’s lives in a green and fun way.  Our brains are quite literally rolling with ideas and concepts to persistently improve our already unique line of “green producing machines” (and by machines, I do mean the people who happen to use our lovely product line!).
